San Francisco running back Elijah Mitchell suffered a sprained MCL during the 49ers Week 1 loss against the Bears that will sideline him for around two months. Mitchell’s injury came during the first half of Sunday’s game against Chicago. While it was initially thought to be a minor injury, an MRI following the game gave Mitchell a diagnosis.

Before exiting the game on Sunday, Mitchell had six carries for 41 yards. With Mitchell out for a significant amount of time, the team will be expecting more from its other running backs — Jeff Wilson, third-round rookie Tyrion Davis-Price and undrafted rookie Jordan Mason. If Mitchell winds up being out for the expected two months, his return would probably come in Week 10 against the Los Angeles Chargers or Week 11 against the Arizona Cardinals in Mexico City.

The Bears defeated the 49ers with a score of 19-10 on Sunday. San Francisco will host the Seattle Seahawks for Week 2.
