ZINNIA Album Release w/ Bombshell Nightlight at The Myrna Loy

December 30, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Rachael Cardiello returns to her hometown theater with a new sound, new band and new record. With layered synth and driving beats, Toronto-based ZINNIA brings an explosive range to Cardiello’s writing, equal parts intimate and fierce.

Since the release of their first single in February, ZINNIA has been turning heads; winning acclaim in the press including CBC’s “Best Lyrics of 2019,” touring across North America making festival appearances including a showcase at POP Montreal. In November ZINNIA released their debut album Sensations in Two Dot to a sold out Toronto audience in an unusual show featuring nine choreographers interpreting each of the album’s nine songs.

“What a churning, brooding, and artful storm of colors.” – Come Here Floyd

“The Toronto artist has an absolutely gorgeous voice with an arresting quality that instantly brings you in to the moment and stops the world from spinning around you.” – Listen with Monger

“Lupins” goes beyond superb and enters the realm of glorious, while the gorgeous voice of Zinnia mesmerizes.” – Rawckus

For fans of: Kate Bush, Bruce Springsteen, PJ Harvey, Future Islands, Big Thief, Sharon Van Etten, Wilco and Angel Olsen

About the album:

Sensations in Two Dot focuses on moments of doubt – creative, societal, and personal – exploring what it means to hold compassion through the multifaceted grey areas of life. Whether in the isolated town of Two Dot, Montana (population 143) or the buzzing streets of Toronto (population 2.6 million), these nine songs probe the complex, unsettling similarities found in the human experience: the hauntings of unrelenting dreams, tensions and tender triumphs in relationships, systems of abuse threaded through communities, and the search for compassion and visibility in everyday interactions. Cardiello pokes fun at the myth of the artistic “sensation” and the popular thirst for sensationalism in news and art.

Joining ZINNIA with an opening set is Bombshell Nightlight – the songwriting project of Jon Cardiello.

True to its bedroom-pop roots, Bombshell Nightlight’s last album Placid Lake features DIY recordings in which Jon played each instrument and mixed the tracks himself while isolated in a Montana cabin. Intricate, open-hearted songs mixed with a wildly intuitive sense of pop melodies and catchy hooks that can only be attributed to Jon’s years writing and touring with his Missoula band Wrinkles.

“Placid Lake is an album based around themes of grief, mourning and self-doubt, adopting an earnest, vulnerable tone that aims for sincerity and honest connection.” – Various Small Flames

“…a set of songs that move in a warm and at the same time energetic spectrum, where his crooner voice remains in the foreground dominating the scratched guitars it presents. This is how work is maintained at all times in a serious but highly emotional countenance, finding a precise and robust instrumentation for songs to grow to unsuspected limits.” – Mindies (translated from Spanish)
